December 2021

Welcome to the final 2021 update from the Food Research Collaboration.

We’re proud this year to have published (among other things) two discussion papers on sustainable food hubs (one focusing on the importance of distribution infrastructure and the other concentrating on the views from farmers); a Rethinking Food Governance report on food policy (dis)connections in England; an examination of how Covid-19 has impacted food policy in South Africa; an analysis of the state of post-EU UK food security in Testing Times for UK Food Policy; an extrapolation of the 70 recommended actions in the Independent Review for the National Food Strategy; and a ground-breaking survey of academics and civil society experts on policy priorities for sustainable diets.

We have also published eighteen blog posts, including many contributions from guest bloggers; and are grateful to our Special Adviser, Professor Tim Lang, for his always topical monthly Field Notes.

In this update, you will find news about:

  • The Northern Real Farming Conference, where our Research Officer previewed her work on Sustainable Food Hubs
  • Our investigation into the food industry’s presence at COP26
  • Tim Lang’s Field Notes column, looking at how Wales and Scotland pull ahead of England on food policy
  • Our recent Food Climate Thinkers event, with Dr Tara Garnett and Paula Feehan
  • The argument that diet really has to jump onto the climate policy menu
  • ICYMI: guest blog by Nigel Curry and our ongoing project of mapping academic centres
