Best practice in local food systems logistics: Summary of US research

Hattie Hammans

Logistics play a key role for any actor involved in sustainable food hubs, whether they are farmers, food hub operators or retailers. The Food Research Collaboration’s Research Officer Hattie Hammans has summarised a research paper by Dr Anuj Mittal, Caroline C. Krejci and Teri J. Craven on the best practices of short supply chain logistics in North America and examined how they might be applied in a UK context in two new publications.

The first publication, a summary of US research, presents best practices in transportation, warehousing and inventory management, while the second, shorter publication, a best practice guidance note, collects and breaks down the most useful insights for UK food hub practitioners. Both publications highlight real life case studies of how North American food hubs have implemented changes to their logistics and the benefits they have derived from these changes.
